The 3 Ms of Managing Your Finances with Corazón

When I sit down with families, business owners, and community leaders, I always remind them that managing money isn’t just about dollars and cents—it’s about the heart behind it all. That’s why I developed the 3M’s of Financial Greatness: Mindset, Meaning, and Money.

These three components are like circles that intersect, and right at the center lies the heart of true financial greatness. Let me walk you through each one.

Mindset: Cultivating Abundance

The first step to financial greatness is your mindset. 

I oftentimes tell a story about a fisherman who’d been fishing all day, filling up three buckets of crabs–German crabs, French crabs, and Mexican crabs. On the docks, he spotted a friend he hadn’t seen and the pair started catching up. His friend noticed he had two of the buckets covered, but the crabs were starting to crawl out of the third bucket. He told him, “Hey, the crabs are trying to climb out of your basket. You better cover it up like the other two.” 

The fisherman responded, “Nah, those are Mexican crabs. As soon as one climbs up the side of the basket, the others pull it back down.” 

When I tell this story, I get a lot of knowing laughter. It’s sad, but true, that too often, our community has been taught to operate from a place of scarcity—believing there isn’t enough opportunity, enough wealth, or enough access for us. This “crabs-in-a-bucket” belief holds us back.

Instead, I want you to embrace an abundance mindset: the idea that there are more than enough opportunities to grow, build, and thrive. When you begin to see possibilities instead of barriers, you start making choices that align with growth. That shift in thinking is the foundation of everything else.

Meaning: Aligning Money With Purpose

Money on its own is just paper. But money with meaning becomes powerful. When you tie your financial goals to your values, faith, family, and culture, money becomes a tool to live the life you were meant to live.

I’ve seen clients light up when they realize their savings isn’t just a number in a bank—it’s the pathway to putting their kids through college, caring for their parents with dignity, or funding a business that gives back to the community. That’s the difference between chasing wealth and creating wealth that matters.
