Estate Planning is the Greatest Gift for Your Family<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When it comes to estate planning, many of my clients remind me of the story of Juan.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Juan lived in a house right next to a river. It had been raining steadily for about a week when the man, named Juan, noticed that the river water was rising and starting to flood his backyard. Later that afternoon, a sheriff arrived in a patrol car.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cJuan,\u201d the sheriff said. \u201cYou\u2019d better get out of here. We\u2019ve had warnings that a big flood is on its way. Let me take you to higher ground.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cNo thank you,\u201d Juan replied. \u201cI have faith in God. I will pray to Him to protect me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The sheriff shrugged, got in his car, and drove away.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The rain kept falling, the water kept rising, and soon it was covering the foundation of Juan\u2019s house. His neighbor, Pedro, was rowing a small boat past Juan\u2019s house.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cGet in, Juan,\u201d Pedro shouted. \u201cCome with me and you\u2019ll be safe.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Juan shook his head and said, \u201cNo. God will rescue me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Pedro insisted, but Juan wouldn’t budge\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The water kept rising and soon an emergency helicopter looking for stranded people came across Juan clinging to his chimney. They threw down a rope and shouted, \u201cGrab hold and we\u2019ll pull you up!\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0\u201cNo!\u201d Juan shouted. \u201cI have faith! God will rescue me!\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The helicopter got another call to rescue somebody who was drowning so they left. Afterward, they circled back to Juan\u2019s house and found that the water had completely engulfed it and Juan was nowhere to be found. He had drowned.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When Juan reached heaven, he was angry and stormed right up to God and shouted, \u201cWhat happened? I prayed and had faith you\u2019d save me, and you let me drown!\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cMy son,\u201d God said. \u201cI sent you a car, a boat and a helicopter. What more do you want?\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

There\u2019s a saying in Spanish, \u201cSi Dios quiere,\u201d or God willing. The idea that we are not responsible for making things happen\u2014and that they\u2019ll only happen of God wants them to\u2014is fatalism. And it\u2019s prevalent in our community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I remind my clients all the time that while God makes the fish, God makes the nets, God does not put the fish in the nets. And October, which is Estate Planning Awareness month, is a great time to remind you how to put the fish in the nets when it comes to planning your legacy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The One Guarantee\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>

There\u2019s a saying that there are only two guarantees in life: death and taxes. We know for sure that one day we will pass on. Yet, a majority of people do not do their estate planning.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In fact, in 82 percent of Latinos do not have a will, <\/span>according to Consumer Reports<\/span><\/a>. That\u2019s the highest percentage of all the demographics. Sixty-one percent of white, non-Hispanic people have a will, 67 percent of English-speaking Asian people have a will, and 77 percent of Black, non-Hispanic people have a will.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Among the top reason Hispanics said they don\u2019t have a will was that they feel they don\u2019t have enough assets. But that\u2019s a belief we need to eradicate. My friend Saundra Davis likes to say, \u201cIf you have body, you need an estate plan.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Estate planning isn\u2019t about how much money you have; it\u2019s about making sure your family is protected and your wishes are respected when you\u2019re no longer around.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
